Been a while since my last piece from War of the Worlds. While the journalist in the book makes no mention of official evacuation orders, both he and his brother chronicle the flood of people away from the area as the martians began to spread from their landing sites. While the notice I’ve created here suggests order, one of the great strengths of Wells’ writing is how realistically he portrays the population’s reaction to an alien invasion. Complacency is followed by disorganized fleeing as six-million Londoners very suddenly become refugees.
